Kampala, Uganda

The Association of Uganda University Sports, AUUS will hold an elective General Assembly at Makerere University. This will be on Friday 30th April 2021 to oversee the change of leadership mandate from those that were entrusted in 2016 to a new mandate that will steer the Association.

It will also be AUUS's 26th Annual General Assembly. It should be recalled that the elections were supposed to be held last year 2020, however, due to the outbreak of COVID 19 pandemic and the subsequent closure of all schools universities inclusive, AUUS activities were suspended too.

This means that a historic assembly is to be held outside the stipulated constitutional period of four years per term. The current AUUS executive committee assumed office in 2016 where Ms. Peninnah Aligawesa Kabenge who also doubles as Makerere University's head of sports scooped the presidency position with Mr. Kisenyi Vincent from Uganda Christian University (UCU) as the vice president.

Ms. Peninnah. A. Kabenge has already confirmed her willingness to run for the presidency again and she's unopposed following the closure of application with only her expressing interest to contest for the Association's big position.

The current executive committee boasts of a number of achievements which include hosting international events such as a well-organized FASU General Assembly and the FISU-FASU-NUSF strategic dialogue in March 2019 where highly placed sports leaders globally embraced the two events. The President of FISU Prof Oleg Matytsin and his 1st Vice President Mr. Leonz Eder; the President of the Association of the Africa Sports Confederation Major General Nasser Ahmed and Mohammed Kammah the Africa Billiard and Snooker Federation were some of the distinguished guests that embraced the occasions. The Executive Committee of AUUS also championed the hosting of the breathtaking event the 3rd World University Netball Championship (Ettuke) at Makerere University, an event that Uganda won after beating Champions South Africa. The legacy of this event remains.

The 1st Kings of Africa Rugby 7s in 2019 at Makerere University and the 1st Africa University Tennis Slam are other events that exposed the students to international events in their backyard. Uganda was well represented in Turin -Italy in the FISU elective General Assembly 2019 that saw the AUUS President Ms. Peninnah Kabenge elected the Vice president of FISU becoming the first woman vice president in the history of FISU.

During this term the 18th and 19th editions of the National University Games were held at Ndejje University and Kisubi University respectively with a lot of success. This is in addition with other leagues played nationally in soccer, basketball and Rugby.  To bridge the gap between the genders three conferences were held in 2018, 2019 and 2020 were successfully held.

Most recent Uganda hosted the 2nd FISU-FASU-NUSF seminar on 12 the December 2020 under the theme "Crafting Strategy in the face of Uncertainty" where strategies to sustain University Sports in the face of COVID19 and related pandemics were crafted.
