NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY DEFENDS TITLE AS UNIVERSITY SPORT SOUTH AFRICA CONCLUDES ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHI
University Sport South Africa (USSA), concluded a 3 days’ athletics championship that took place at University of Johannesburg where the North-West University (NWU) emerged as winners of the tournament.
Due to their impressive performance, the North-West University was able to collect 34 first place medals thus they defended the title which they won in the last edition of 2019 at Stellenbosch having bagged 29 medals overall. They dominated the tournament from day one with 7 medals up to the final day.
University of Johannesburg, the hosts, also exhibited a brilliant performance after finishing second on the medal list table with 24 medals. This was a massive improvement in contrast to the last edition of 2019 where they scooped the third position.
The three day tournament also saw Gift Leotlela, Tuks Sprinter becoming the sixth south African to record a sub-10 second race on Friday joining Akani Simbine(9.89s), Thando Tito(9.95s), Wayde Van Niekesh (9.94s), Henricho Bruintjies (9.97s), and Simon Magakwe (9.98s). In an interview with the Turks Sport club website, Leotlela said;
"I had a good start in my semi-final. Over the latter stages of the race, I purposely slowed down to save my legs. In the final, my only goal was to 'execute' my technique to perfection. I again had a good start. Then it was a case of running flat out until I crossed the finish line,"
"It feels amazing."
Leotlela after a number of failures to qualify for Tokyo Olympics at last secured himself a ticket to the global showpiece scheduled for this year.
